Just a Rose of Sharon

I always end up having Roses of Sharon.  They have beautiful blooms but they are SO invasive.
I potted one up, thinking I'd eventually make it into a topiary.  Didn't expect any blooms this year.

It's upstairs on the porch off the master bedroom.  These stripes are new to me.  Maybe it's just the view from behind the bloom, but I can't stop looking at them.

Something I often view as a nuisance and commonplace.....and I'm enjoying its beauty.
Glorious, in a word.

It's an unexpected surprise.  A simple pleasure.  A beautiful gift.

And I'm loving it.

I've Got Autumn Decor, Too!

Here it is.  Got it all out last week and dumped it on the family room carpet that was due for vacuuming that day.  Not impressive at all.
The cats were all safely bedded down for an afternoon nap.  I tried to be quiet so that the rustling and hanging wouldn't awaken them, since they find this sort of activity fascinating and believe themselves helpful.

I strung some winterberry along the top of the kitchen hutch.  I like it with the whites along the top.  It goes nicely with the dishes, too!

Some more berries over the kitchen/foyer doorway.

Berries cascading from the old chamber pot.

Same as usual garland on the dining room mantel, where it will live until January.

A nod to autumn on a picture frame.

The candle rings fill in as little wreaths.  The wreath wire wound nicely around the hinge of the cabinet door propped up in the dining room.

Bubs showed up when I was still in the dining room.  He was still sluggish from sleeping, thank goodness!

The living room hutch gets a "wreath" and berries.

Another "wreath" over the foyer mirror.

And I'm done.

It's Thursday

I sure did enjoy the hibiscus this year.  This old fashioned beauty bloomed like crazy.

Then something ate all the leaves - you could see right through the plant.

Then, it bloomed again!  The blooms were smaller and paler, but there they were.

It was inspirational, I tell you!  Inspirational!

Have a beautiful Thursday,

Where I Spent Last Week

One of the things on my to-do list was to paint the front porch roof.  It was a tricky and fiddly sort of project, with quite a learning curve, to my surprise.  The roof paint was very thick, kind of like nail polish.  It was hard to keep a thin coat on, and the paint takes a long time to dry.
By the end of the first day though, I was much more comfortable moving around up there!

Here is what I started with.  And what I did went something like this.....

1.  Throw rope over roof.  Tie to garden hose.  Haul back up.
2.  Start scraping.  Scrape some more.  Repeat.
3.  Repeat #2.
4.  Sand rust.  Wash down roof with bleach solution to get rid of mildew.  Hose down.

5.  Day 2.  Repeat #2.
6.  Paint.  Stay as close to roof as possible to avoid sliding off.  A wet metal roof is slippery!
7.  Day 3.  Repeat #2, finish painting.
Lots of other things learned up there last week, but you get the idea!  Boy, do those raised seams leave a mark!

His Creation Glorifies Him

As I sit in the hammock swing, I see the creation once again glorifying its Creator.
The extravagantly blue sky of autumn,

I swing in a circle, lean back, look up, and take it in.

The leaves that are too numerous to count are still green.
I watch the sunlight change as the sun tracks across the sky.  Every day, we can count on that.
Because our Lord is ever faithful.

Coming full circle I see timeworn beauty in the age of patina.  Beautiful blossoms.  Found treasures.

Surrounded by His blessing.  Enfolded in His love.  Filled with His joy.  Blessed with His peace.
Because He is God.
He is sovereign.
His faithfulness, lovingkindness, grace sustain me.  I abide, rest in Him.

Have a beautiful, blessed Sunday.  Make sure to visit Charlotte for Spiritual Sundays.

Romantic Fireside Dining for September's Note Card Party

Two years ago when we redid our kitchen I set up a temporary kitchen in the family room.
As you can see, it was an eat in kitchen!

On this evening, and it was this time of year, it seemed a good idea to dine by candle and fire light.

The colors were warm, romantic and inviting.

Mister was delighted when he came home to this!

Join us, won't you, as we party with Vee at her monthly Note Card Party!

My Favorite Tin

This tin was a gift, and I keep it out all year round just so I can see it every day.
It was given to me by one of the thriftiest gals ever - my first MIL.
You know how I love thrifty!  Mister calls me a skinflint.
There is half of an old mailing label on the bottom, so I know it was at least secondhand before it was mine!

Happy White Wednesday!  Do make sure to visit Kathleen for this wonderful party!

4 O'Clocks

The 4 o'clocks have been here longer than we have.
They meet many garden requirements for me.

First, they are perennials.

Next, they require NO care.  I do weed back some of the Chinese Lanterns to give them more room, if you want to call that care.
I do not water them.  I do nothing at all for them other than making room.

Additionally, they bloom in 4 different colors here between the driveway and house.  Deep pink, light pink, yellow, white.

They are going strong!

Have a lovely Monday and wonderful week.

This week's project here......I'll wash, prep and paint the red metal roofs - front porch and sun room - on the house!
What are YOU up to??

Herb Banner

I'm not a banner creator, although I've seen many lovely banners by fellow bloggers.  But I did notice that a project in the sun porch is a banner of sorts.

The beadboard makes a lovely backdrop.

I am drying cayenne peppers and herbs.

Peppers on either end. Filled in with oregano, rosemary, thyme, basil.

Garden Bounty.
With a purpose!

Have a wonderful Friday and weekend!

(Oh, and the young girl who took the flowers in the previous post - she walked by yesterday and thanked me in person for the flowers!  And I thanked her for the note!)

Blessings All Around!

Thought I'd set some of today's garden bounty out to share.

We have hot peppers out the wazoo.  I put today's zinnias and some tomatoes out.
People stopped within MINUTES.
But what made my day, really made my day, was when I was driving home from the drugstore and I saw a girl carrying some familiar flowers.
I was delighted to see who took them!

When I got home, I looked in the box and saw this sweet note!
"The flowers are so beautiful.  Thank you!  You made my day!"

And, young lady, YOU made mine!

sunflowers in kitchen

Ok. So the sunrise scheme for this morning was a bust.
I got up as planned - so excited.  But it was overcast, so the sun came up and was obscured by clouds.
Ah, well, I'll do it again, I'm sure.

However.  Some friends came to visit yesterday and brought flowers.

A nice spot of sunshine for the kitchen!

They are right by the sink where I work and enjoy them.

Wishing each of you a blessed and sunny weekend! Carol

My Scheme

Now that sun has returned to our region, I shall come down here early in the morning before the sun rises and collect my coffee.  I'll take the whole carafe with me!

I'll slip out to the upstairs porch off the master bedroom.

(Here is a rose of sharon I potted up this year.  It will eventually be a topiary.  It's blooming like nuts!)
I'll sip coffee and watch the sun rise.

I'll let you know which blooms are open!
